Every year, people dish about their favorite and least-favorite Oscar looks after the big night. I prefer to take a different spin on the situation, picking out elegant styles worthy of incorporating into my own spring wardrobe. Here are the trends I’ll be emulating. To see the top styles I'm mentioning, go here and click on the thumbnail images to find your favorite celebs.

Subtle Patterns
Both Maggie Gyllenhaal and Rachel McAdams pulled off patterned gowns this year, and I plan to do the same when sundress season rolls around. Slightly tropical or watercolor-inspired patterns in tones that aren’t drastically bright can make an elegant, stylish statement for casual or formal situations.

Blue as the New Black
Mariah Carey and Gabourey Sidibe both showed up in stunning shades of midnight blue. I loved it because the shade was still dark and slimming, but it provided a nice change from the little black dress. When choosing this style for spring, look for anything from an everyday jersey dress to throw on when you’re in a rush to a cocktail dress that’ll make you stand out in a crowd.

Muted Metallics
Although the shinier the better is usually my motto, I loved the way Sandra Bullock, Amanda Seyfried and Kate Winslet managed to pull off muted metallic gowns that looked glamorous but not over the top. I’m thinking I’ll try and find a muted metallic skirt to pair with a black tank top and sandals for a similarly elegant look that possesses just the right amount of shine.

The Return of the One-Shoulder
After experiencing a lot of popularity in the early 2000s, the one-shoulder look seemed to fall off the map. I’ve always loved this style, finding it both modern and Grecian at the same time. Last night, both Sigourney Weaver and Molly Ringwald sported one-shouldered gowns, which reawakened my hopes that I’ll be able to find some summer dresses with similar styles this year. I particularly loved Tina Fey’s vintage-inspired frock, which combined the flattering sweetheart-inspired neckline with the one-shoulder cut. My fingers are crossed that this look will show up at boutiques in Richmond.

Sleek Hair
While most of us tend to pair up-dos with red-carpet attire, this year Sandra Bullock and Kate Winslet both wore their hair down and sleekly styled. I thought the look provided a nice contrast to some of the other extremely styled coiffures of the evening. I know when I look at pictures of myself, I often think my face looks better when I have my hair down as opposed to styled away from my face. These ladies may inspire me to wear my hair sleek and ironed at my next fancy affair.

Bright Lips
Again, pulling from Sandra Bullock's look, sometimes a subtle eye and a brightly pigmented pout really stand out in pictures. Often when I'm getting ready for a big night, I go with a neutral lip and smoky eye, then wonder why I look washed out in photos later. I'm going to try to keep in mind that sometimes a natural eye and colorful lip brings more warmth to the rest of the face, making for lasting images.

I am SO ready for spring. In fact, I’ve got on a knee-length dress with bare legs and pumps even though it’s only about 41 degrees outside because I’m so sick of tights and leggings that I just couldn’t bear to put them on this morning. I’ve always chosen fashion over practicality, and right now I feel the need to channel spring with my wardrobe selection.

This Thursday, you can get a taste of spring at Eurotrash’s event during
Carytown First. The boutique has a fresh selection of floral and nautical spring frocks and is offering 25 percent off one new spring item when you shop between 6 and 8 p.m. on Thursday. Can’t make it? Call and set up an appointment for spring personal shopping with owner Anne Hughes, and you’ll get 20 percent off your spring purchase.

While you’re wandering in Carytown, also check out the second location of fab’rik (3018 W. Cary St.). It’s larger than the first Richmond location at Short Pump Town Center and is packed with affordable spring staples. Last week, I took home two sundresses that can be paired with sweaters and cowboy boots now and flip-flops later this summer, along with a chunky multichain necklace for about $115. Not too shabby.

Head to About Salon on Monday between 6:30 and 9 p.m. for a Stella & Dot trunk show. Stella & Dot is a chunky, fashion-forward line of jewelry that’s sold in home shows across the United States. The current collection features fun turquoise and orange shades that are eye-catching and feminine at the same time.

About Salon, owned by Alison Stokes, has been around for about a year (in the space formerly occupied by Austin's Salon and Day Spa), and it specializes in any type of hair service as well as nails. The salon's stylists will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about their offerings. Appetizers will also be served, so stop by and enjoy — no RSVP required.

Head to Banana Republic’s After Five Style Event tomorrow night between 5 and 9 p.m. to shop the spring collection. You’ll get 25 percent off anything you spend above $100 all evening, and if you RSVP on Banana Republic's Facebook page (or if you’re a Banana Republic credit-card holder), you’ll get 30 percent off the same purchase. The Short Pump Town Center location is also offering free refreshments and free mini-makeovers from Mary Kay.

I happened upon another of these events at the Short Pump Banana Republic a few months ago, and it was a great time. The details were the same, except the makeup artists on hand were from Prescriptives. After getting some great deals on stylish separates to wear to work, I ended up heading straight for Macy’s to get the colors the makeup artists used on my eyes. New clothing and face looks in one night. What more can a gal ask for?

What’s better than finding an awesome one-of-a-kind vintage skirt that fits just right? Finding an awesome one-of-a-kind vintage skirt that fits just right and knowing that part of the money you spent on it is going to a good cause.

That’s why you should head to Rumors Boutique today between 4 and 7 p.m. Shop the selection of stylish gently used and vintage men’s and women’s apparel, buy something great, and 20 percent of your purchase will be donated to the Fan Free Clinic. I’d call it a perfect excuse to shop!
