Earl’s churning off the coast and not bringing us any rain, or much wind either for the Labor Day weekend, meaning that tonight’s First Fridays at the arts and cultural venues of West Main Street and downtown, on and off Broad, will be jumping.

Some things I’m liable to check out:

First at the Glave Kocen Gallery, the ambitious exhibition titled “1” by Richmond magazine’s own creative director, Steve Hedberg. This show features a painted and filmed chronicle of his journeys up and down U.S. Route 1, the main north-south automobile route on the East Coast before it was replaced by Interstate 95. Smokin’ on the Water

Get your paddles ready, Richmond, but not for a kayak or a canoe.  It will be dragon boats that fly across the water of the James on July 31.  

The ancient Chinese sport will come to Richmond in the form of the city’s first International Dragon Boat Festival at Rocketts Landing.
