Richmond Magazine’s September Issue
Nearby adventures, the city’s mayoral candidates and more
  • For folks cowed by high gas prices, it’s nice to know that plenty of adventures are just within a couple hours of home. In “Exploring New Worlds,” our writers discover some offbeat getaways, like strawberry picking at a commune and even a little “nakation” at a nudist resort.
  • As Richmond’s five mayoral candidates hit the bricks in search of votes, we went with them. Here’s an up-close-and-personal look at each one.
  • OK, so just what the heck do birds of prey, pop artist Andy Warhol and High School Musical 2 have in common? No, it’s not a joke — they’re just a few of the “25 A&E Must-sees” for 2008-2009. We cover the calendar of music, art, family events, history and more.
  • Have you ever turned a corner in Richmond only to have that weird feeling that you were in another city or another country? So have we, and we’ve got the photos to prove it. Our photo feature, “Far Away, So Close,” offers some glimpses of the world without leaving town.
  • With a fresh new album out, @#%&*! Smilers, Richmond native and singer-songwriter Aimee Mann spends a few minutes talking with contributor Richard Foster. The one-time Oscar nominee explains the title of her latest work and laments her lack of time to get in some boxing.
  • Even Richmond’s historically stable housing market can be a cipher to many first-time homebuyers. In our Homebuyer’s Guide, we offer some advice for new buyers and we get a look at the boundaries between kind neighbors and considerate ones. And as students get ready for classes again, we check in with education topics in our Virginia Schools Guide.
